Happy New Year, streaming fans! 2022 is here, so it’s time to look forward to what will hopefully be another bumper year of movies and shows from Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and other services.
In previous years, January has been a lean month for major streaming brands. Sure, we’re more likely to spend more time indoors due to the bad weather (well, in the Northern Hemisphere anyway), but new shows and movies are sometimes scarce.
This is not the case for January 2022, however. Not only are there a lot of Netflix movies and Netflix shows to enjoy, but there are also new and old HBO Max shows that you may like. Add in a handful of interesting and highly anticipated Amazon Prime TV series and Disney Plus deals, and you’ll be spoiled for choice this month.
Below, you’ll find 10 of the greatest movies and shows to watch on Netflix, Prime Video, and more, including Euphoria season 2 and an extremely spooky Netflix miniseries.
We would have included HBO’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary special and The Boba Fett Book here, but both were released before we put this list together. Still, they’re good watches, and they’re worth checking out alongside our other 10 streaming picks for January 2022.
Euphoria season 2 (HBO Max)
When to broadcast it: Sunday January 9
Just weeks after helping Spider-Man: No Way Home become the highest grossing film of 2021, Zendaya returns to the small screen to reprise her role as a recovering drug addict on Bennett Street in Euphoria season 2.
The first season of the award-winning series received critical acclaim, with many praising Zendaya’s heartbreaking performance, the show’s awe-inspiring visuals, and at times the brutally honest description of the addiction – though there have been criticisms of it. use of adult graphic content in a program targeting a teenage audience.
Two specials, which landed on HBO in December 2020 and January 2021 respectively, were also well received, so expect Season 2 of Euphoria to build on the solid foundation laid by its predecessors.
For UK viewers, Euphoria season 2 will also be released weekly on Sky Atlantic and Now TV (with entertainment subscription) starting Monday, January 10.
Eternals (Disney Plus)
When to broadcast it: wednesday 12 january
A little over two months after its exclusive theatrical release, Eternals will finally land on Disney’s streaming platform on January 12.
Set in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, the Marvel film follows a new group of superheroes – the Eternals, oddly enough – as they escalate in the absence of the Avengers and seek to avert another disaster. potentially fatal.
Chloe Zhao’s MCU offering has been touted as a superhero epic and a potential 2022 Oscars favorite, but a mixed-to-poor response from fans and critics may have dealt a blow to those odds. Still, we enjoyed it, and it’s nice to see Marvel Studios take some big swings with their Phase 4 slate, even if they ultimately fail to resonate with audiences. It will also be free to watch for all Disney Plus subscribers, so there is no risk in watching it and making up your own mind.
Peacekeeper (HBO Max)
When to broadcast it: Thursday January 13
A spin-off series that takes place after James Gunn’s smooth reboot of The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker will explore the origins of John Cena’s anti-heroic main character and follow the subsequent missions he takes on for the known secret US government organization. under the name of Task Force X.
The show, billed as a superhero comedy-drama, will reunite fans of The Suicide Squad with humorous supporting characters in Steve Agee’s John Economos and Jennifer Holland’s Emilia Harcourt. Newcomers include Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo, Chukwudi Iwuji’s Clemson Murn and Vigilante, another crime fighter from Peacemaker, played by Freddie Stroma.
James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Slither) wrote all eight episodes of the series and directed five episodes. If you’re a big fan of Gunn and / or Cena’s previous works, and superhero fare in general, this R-rated DCEU entry should be right for you.
Hotel Transylvania: Transformia (Amazon Prime Video)
When to broadcast it: Friday January 14
The Hotel Transylvania franchise has received a mixed response so far from critics, but moviegoers are clearly delighted – so much so that the film series has grossed over $ 1.3 billion at the global box office. . So it’s no surprise that a fourth entry was announced in February 2019, but, rather than hit theaters, it will air exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
Hotel Transylvania: Transformia flips the script on its animated band of monsters. Here, Dracula (Brian Hull) and his company are transformed into humans by Monsterification Ray, a new invention courtesy of Van Helsing (Kathryn Hahn), while Dracula’s son-in-law Johnny (Andy Samberg) is transformed into a monster.

After Life season 3 (Netflix)
When to broadcast it: Friday January 14
After its second season garnered mixed to positive reviews (much like Season 1), Ricky Gervais’ comedic Netflix show is back for a third outing.
With Tony Johnson (Gervais) suffering another major loss in the After Life Season 2 finale, it looks like the show’s main character needs more than the words of wisdom from Brandy the German Shepherd in the supporting cast of the series to help him get through more heartache. And that’s what the After Life season 3 trailer teases, with Tony seemingly set to go on a life-affirming journey that might help him find some semblance of closure.
Expect plenty of swearing, insanely funny moments, and heart-wrenching drama – all of which we’ve come to expect from Gervais over the years – in the final season of After Life.
The House
When to broadcast it: Friday January 28
The House, an upcoming Netflix anthology stop-motion miniseries, sparked our interest when its trailer landed in December 2021, and for good reason: it looks creepy, unsettling, surreal, and incredibly funny.
A three-part series, The House will follow three storylines – featuring a poor family, an anxious developer, and a tired landlord – through different eras that are seemingly linked by where they all reside. With anthropomorphized animals making up a large part of The House’s animated cast, fans of these Sylvanian Families toys might never look at such collectible miniatures the same way again.
The House was developed for Netflix by Nexus Studios, the production company behind Billie Eilish’s Apple TV Plus animated special and Childish Gambino’s animated avatar for a 2019 Google Grammy Awards commercial. disturbing Netflix project at the end of the month.

The duo, who now work for opposing governments, find themselves embroiled in a game of political subterfuge, and it doesn’t take long before their lives are in danger.
With the backing of top talent including Jeremy Irons (Watchmen, Justice League) and Ulrich Matthes (Downfall) as former UK Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and Adolf Hitler respectively, Munich: The Edge of War appears to be a drama of exciting war that could be in the running for the 2022 awards season. One for history buffs to check out.

A story from the Israeli TV show On the Spectrum, As We See It follows three roommates in their twenties on the autism spectrum – Jack (Rick Glassman), Harrison (Albert Rutecki) and Violet (Sue Ann Pien) – then that they navigate life, work and love with the help of their assistant Mandy (Sosie Bacon), families, friends and each other.
According to an Amazon Studios press release, As We See It will show how “these roommates suffer setbacks and celebrate triumphs in their own unique journey to independence and acceptance.” With the show’s trio of lead actors identifying themselves as living on the autism spectrum, and with On the Spectrum showrunners Dana Idisis and Yuval Shafferman producing the Amazon adaptation, we hope As We See It will increase public awareness of autism.
The Legend of Vox Machine (Amazon Prime video)
When to broadcast it: Friday January 28
Based on the first campaign of Critical Role’s hugely popular Dungeon and Dragons (D&D) web series, The Legend of Vox Machina is a fantasy animated series aimed at adults and premieres on Amazon Prime in late January.
Set in the fictional land of Exandria, The Legend of Vox Machine will recount the events of Vox Machina – a group made up of members including gnome cleric Pike Trickfoot (Ashley Johnson), barbarian goliath Grog Strongjaw (Travis Willingham), the half- elf ranger Vex ‘ahlia Vessar (Laura Bailey) and half-elf thug Vax’ildan Vessar (Liam O’Brien) – as they seek revenge for the murders of the Whitestone rulers at the hands of vampiric lord Sylas Briarwood (Matthew Mercer) ) and his servants.
Amazon’s animated offering will tell a whole new story about Vox Machina’s seven-member team in the first two of 12 Season 1 episodes, before adapting Critical Role’s Briarwood arc for its other entries. Critical role, D&D and Fans of fantasy animation should find some fun here – and a second season has already been lit.
