New movies to be released this week from February 21 to 27, 2022
Cyrano (2021)
Rating: PG-13
Release date: In theaters nationwide Friday, February 25, 2022.
Summary: Cyrano tells the legendary story of a blacksmith and master swordsman, Cyrano (Peter Dinklage), who falls head over heels in love with the charming Roxanne (Haley Bennett). Despite being in love with Roxanne, Cyrano doubts himself too much to make a move, but is then enlisted by the dashing Christian (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.) to woo her with letters Cyrano writes for Christian.
To monitor: The film was nominated for an Academy Award in Costume Design. And is also in the running for three BAFTA Awards, including Best British Film of the Year.
word on the street: The film is based on the musical that Haley Bennett and Peter Dinklage performed during a limited off-Broadway run in New York in 2019.
My take: Many film critics believe that Peter Dinklage should have been nominated for an Oscar for this role, subsequently many groups of film critics singled out Dinklage and Cyrano in their year-end awards.
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Homecoming (2022)
Rating: N / A
Release date: Premiering on the Netflix platform on Friday, February 23, 2022.
Summary: In A Homecoming Madea, Madea (Tyler Perry) prepares to welcome her family, who have come from all over to celebrate her great-grandson’s graduation from university. However, beware, because within the reunion lurk secrets that threaten to destroy this joyful family celebration.
To monitor: Perry originally planned to retire the character of Madea after her 2019 movie A Madea family funeral. Instead, much to the delight of his fans, he decided to revive the character with his Netflix deal.
word on the street: The film is based on Tyler Perry’s play “Madea’s Farewell Play” which toured the country in 2019.
my catch: We all need a little more Madea in our lives.
Studio 666 (2022)
Rating: R
Release date: In theaters nationwide Friday, February 25, 2022.
Summary: The horror movie Workshop 666 takes place when Dave and the rest of the Foo Fighters are looking for the perfect place to record their long-awaited 10th album. Finally, they found the perfect place, a mansion in Encino that’s steeped in rock and roll history. However, there is a problem: supernatural forces threaten to take over their lives.
To monitor: The film is based on a story by Dave Grohl and was shot in secret during the pandemic.
word on the street: Besides the Foo Fighters playing themselves, the cast includes Will Forte, Jenna Ortega, Whitney Cummings, Jeff Garlin and Leslie Grossman.
my catch: I love Foo Fighters and horror movies, so I can’t wait to see this movie.

Summary: Oscar nominated shorts are three separate programs of Oscar-nominated films in the Animation, Live-Action and Documentary categories.
To monitor: The films come from all over the world, including Afghanistan, Germany, Poland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Russia and Canada.
word on the street: Obviously, the theatrical release of the short films nominated each year is the largest commercial release of short films in the world on the planet.
My Take: I go every year to see this impressive collection of films from all over the world.

Shortly after arriving, she discovers a kidnapped child hiding in a car belonging to one of the people inside the rest area she is stranded with.
To monitor: The film is based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Taylor Adams.

my catch: I’m always ready to see a good thriller.
Butter (2020)
Rating: PG-13
Release date: In select theaters Friday, February 25, 2022.
Summary: Butter is about a lonely, unpopular teenager (Alex Kersting) who everyone calls “Butter.” Butter decides to make history. It’s going to eat itself to death, live on the internet, and everyone is welcome to watch. Therefore, as the date approaches, Butter becomes popular, and it feels good. Will Butter go through with his date with suicide?
To monitor: The cast includes Mira Sorvino, Mykelti Williamson, Monte Markham and Annabeth Gish.
