There are some amazing new movies to check out this week!

This week brings us romantic comedy The Lost City starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, gripping drama Topside and adventure film Infinite Storm starring Naomi Watts.

New movies to be released this week from March 21 to 27, 2022

The Lost City (2022)

Rating: PG-13

Release date: In theaters nationwide Friday, March 25, 2022.

Summary: In the lost city, Novelist Loretta Sage (Sandra Bullock) is on a book tour of Asia with her silly cover model Alan Caprison (Channing Tatum). While on tour, Loretta is kidnapped by Abigail Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe), an eccentric billionaire convinced that Loretta’s latest book is the key to a lost fortune. Therefore, Alan sets out to rescue Loretta… good luck with that.

To monitor: Sandra Bullock recently said that this could be her last movie for a while as she takes the time to raise her family.

word on the street: Bullock made a cameo in the next Brad Pitt movie Bullet Train, so Brad Pitt did the same in this movie.

my catch: The film is very reminiscent of one of my favorite films of the 80s, Romanticize the stone with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Above (2020)

Rating: N / A

Release date: In select theaters Friday, March 25, 2022.

Summary: Above is set deep in New York City, where a five-year-old girl (Zhaila Farmer) and her mother (Celine Held) live among a group who have claimed the abandoned subway tunnels as their home until authorities discover them . Now mother and daughter must hit the streets of New York, a world they know very little about.

To monitor: The film was a hit on the film festival circuit, winning the Special Jury Prize at the 2020 SXSW Film Festival.

word on the street: Zhaila Farmer makes her film debut in the film.

my catch: I can’t wait to see this film because I’ve heard wonderful things about this film from film critics who have seen it at film festivals where it has played.

Love like falling petals

Love Like Falling Petals (2022)

Rating: N / A

Release date: Premiere on the Netflix platform on Thursday, March 24, 2022.

Summary: Love like falling petals tells the story of Harutoo (Keto Nakajima), who falls in love with hairdresser Misaki (Honoka Matsumoto). Misaki has worked hard to get where she is; Therefore, Harutoo is inspired to take back his passion for photography and make it his profession. However, this romance is about to undergo a massive change as the two gain information that will change their lives forever.

To monitor: The film is based on a 2017 novel by Keisuke Uyama.

word on the street: Keto Nakajima is best known for his film silver spoon (2014).

My take: I’m always up for a good heartbreaking romance movie.

Infinite Storm (2022)

Release date: In select theaters Friday, March 25, 2022.

Summary: In infinite storm, Pam Bales (Naomi Watts), an experienced mountaineer, is forced to turn back on her ascent of Mount Washington due to a fast approaching massive blizzard. On the way down, she encounters a lonely, stranded man and takes it upon herself to get them both off the mountain before nightfall and certain death.

To monitor: The film is based on a true story.

word on the street: The director of the film, Malgorzata Szumowska, is one of the most prominent Polish female directors of the modern era. His last movie, Twarz (2018), won the Silver Bear award at the 2018 Berlin International Film Festival.

my catch: I think Naomi Watts is one of our best actresses making movies these days.

7 days (2021)

Release date: In select theaters Friday, March 25, 2022.

Summary: 7 days is about Ravi (Karan Soni) and Rita (Geraldine Viswanathan), who, after a very uncomfortable pre-arranged date, have to shelter together after the COVID pandemic lockdown.

To monitor: The film is produced by legendary filmmakers Mark and Jay Duplass.

word on the street: The film just won Best First Feature at the 37th Independent Spirit Awards.

my catch: I find it funny that a romantic comedy called 7 Days was shot in just eight days.

You’re Not My Mother (2021)

Summary: you are not my mother is set in a North Dublin housing estate where, after disappearing, Char’s mother, Angela (Carolyn Bracken), returns, only to have her personality drastically changed. Despite her grandmother’s (Ingrid Craigie) objections, Char (Hazel Doupe) decides to uncover the truth behind her mother’s disappearance and, in turn, unearth her family’s dark secrets.

To monitor: The film premiered at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival, winning second place in the People’s Choice Award: Midnight Madness.

word on the street: The film is 86% on the Rotten Tomatoes website with over 22 critical reviews.

my catch: Hazel Doupe has recently acted in fantastic films, including Float like a butterfly (2018), Michael inside (2017), and In the Badlands (2017).
