7 best new movies to watch online this week: Black Adam, Woman King and more (November 21-28)

Straight from the cinemas, we have new films to stream online this week, ranging from action-packed comic book films to artistic and provocative award winners. The biggest new movie of the week online is Black Adam, which is out today on video-on-demand online.

DC’s latest movie, black adam shakes things up by adding another super-powered being to a world that needs more help with order and chaos than anything else. Waited for Black Adam on HBO Max now? Well, our best guess is that it arrives mid-December, no later than the 19th.

The other two big VOD releases of the week are critically acclaimed The Woman King and the hilarious class war movie Triangle of Sadness. In a month where billionaires are losing big bucks, this one feels truly worthy.

Somewhere else, netflix and HBO Max lean into festive fun with feel-good The Noel Diary and Holiday Harmony.

Want something more dramatic and real? Netflix’s documentary Ghislaine Maxwell seeks to shed light on how she helped Jeffrey Epstein and features interviews with survivors of their sex trafficking.

black adam

black adam, star Dwayne Johnson’s passion project for years, gives the DC Universe movies and shows a great new anti-hero to do battle with the rest of them. And he doesn’t come alone either. Black Adam also features many other comic book heroes on the big screen, such as Dr. Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo).

Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson), however, is not Black Adam at first. The film is a massive origin story that shows him as Teth-Adam, who was imprisoned in 2600 BC. Now freed, this brawny brute has a few jobs: learning comic timing, rescuing the residents of the Middle Eastern town of Kahndaq, and helping the child and his mother who are linked to his escape.

I’ve heard a lot of different views on the movie, so I’ll admit my less than impressive view isn’t shared by all. If you lower your expectations, you’ll probably find Black Adam enjoyable. I just thought there was too much going on for it all to seem like it really mattered. A huge building block for DC movies in the future, you’ll want to stick around for the Black Adam post-credits scene which made my theater applaud.

triangle of sadness

These days you hear a lot of people say “eat the rich”. To that I’ll add, “well, not those…they probably don’t taste so good anymore.” Winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, Triangle of Sadness is about the mess the mega-rich can cause aboard a luxury yacht. As we board the yacht with a pair of models who are in an emotionally manipulative relationship, Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean Kriek) soon encounter a whole ship full of even wealthier people, none of whom hears.

Then chaos ensues as the ship hits troubled waters. The ship’s captain (Woody Harrelson) seems as childish and incompetent as anyone, and it’s up to the hard-working crew members to try to make it out alive. Hilarious and lovingly crude humor that might remind you of a certain Family Guy tune, Triangle of Sadness is a strong farce.

The female king

The Woman King, which surprisingly reigned supreme at the box office, is finally coming home. The film, which is based on true events, focuses on the Agojie tribe, the most powerful all-female army in the history of the world. Viola Davis stars as General Nanisca, a fictional character who led the women, and received rave reviews for her performance. Thuso Mbedu, who plays a warrior named Nawi, and John Boyega, who plays King Ghezo, who doesn’t always agree with Nanisca, also earn their flowers.

Alas, not everyone thinks The Woman King is worth watching, as arguments for a boycott have surfaced online, due to a lack of consideration for the involvement of the kingdom of Dahomey in slavery. Stars Viola Davis and Julius Tennon (who are also married and producing partners) responded by saying Variety (opens in a new tab) that this movie is not supposed to be the whole story of the tribe.

Goodnight Oppy (Prime Video)

The closest thing to Wall•E in this lifetime (at least we hope humanity won’t be stuck in this vision of the future), Good Night Oppy is a documentary that shows us the beauty of an adorable robot in space. And it could be the perfect Thanksgiving movie for the whole family.

Opportunity, a Mars Exploration Rover that earned the nickname Oppy, not only looks a bit like Pixar’s interplanetary robot, but it’s also had its own adventures. You’ll see Oppy “watch” the dust storms and learn how he regularly shattered expectations of what he could survive. Narrated by Angela Bassett.

Holiday Harmony (HBO Max)

Gail (Annelise Cepero) hits the road to pursue her ambitions as a singer/songwriter. His goal, playing the iHeartRadio Christmas Eve special (which looks like the biggest product placement of the month), is even within reach.

At least he was, until an alpaca got in his way. In the most special holiday moment we can remember (at least since Falling for Christmas by Lindsay Lohan last week), Gail finds herself stuck in a small town where her aspirations seem a bit too big for Jeremy (Jeremy Sumpter), who helps her fix her car. He also helps her get out of town, setting her up to teach school kids who need help learning to play music.

The Christmas Diary (Netflix)

Want more holiday charm this season? Well, Netflix’s story about best-selling writer Jacob Turner (Justin Hartley) begins with a bit of sadness, as he returns home after the death of his mother, to meet Rachel (Barrett Doss), who also tries to find out more about his own mother.

The two go on a road trip to find out more about their past, while Rachel insists on Jacob’s peculiar singleness – he’s quite the handsome guy. Eventually, they learn more and more about their family histories and begin to bond with them.

Ghislaine Maxwell as Filthy Rich (Netflix)

You may know Jeffrey Epstein, who pleaded guilty and was convicted in 2008 of child prostitution charges. As you may also know, Epstein was arrested again in 2019 for sex trafficking of minors – which he was accused of doing with a number of ultra-famous celebrities – before dying in his cell in prison, in an act that examiners ruled to be suicide. But what do you know of his accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell?

Netflix’s latest major true crime documentary seeks to draw the curtain back on Ms Maxwell, interviewing some of their victims and following her criminal trial which ran from 2020 to 2021.

Watch it on netflix (opens in a new tab) from Friday (Nov 25)
