9 new movies this week: “Breaking”, “Samaritan” and more!

Here’s the full rundown of new movies hitting theaters this week, as well as those hitting major streaming platforms.

New Movies Coming This Week August 22-28, 2022

Breakup (2022)

Evaluation: PG-13

Release date: In theaters nationwide Friday, August 26, 2022.

Summary: In Breakup Brian (John Boyega), is a Marine war veteran who faces the mental and emotional challenges of returning to civilian life. Conversely, Brian is at a breaking point, both financially and mentally. Something must be going his way.

To monitor: The film won the US Dramatic Special Jury Award at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and was a big hit at the 2022 Atlanta Film Festival.

word on the street: This is the final feature film appearance of the late Michael Kenneth Williams.

my catch: I know everyone knows John Boyega for his portrayal of Finn in the Star Wars franchise, but I’ll never forget his film debut as Moses in the standout 2011 film Attack the block.

Samaritan

Samaritan (2022)

Evaluation: PG-13

Release date: Premiering on Amazon Prime on Friday, August 26, 2022.

Summary: Samaritan is set twenty years after the super-powered vigilante named Samaritan was killed in a fiery battle in a warehouse. Since then, the city has declined to the brink of chaos and is in need of a savior. Thirteen-year-old Sam (Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton) is convinced that Samaritan is not dead but in hiding and is his mysterious and reclusive neighbor, Mr. Smith (Sylvester Stallone).

To monitor: Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton is best known for his role as Ashtray in the television series Euphoria.

word on the street: Sylvester Stallone believed in the project so much that he is one of the film’s producers.

my catch: It’s always fun to see Stallone in a movie, especially where he’s playing a superhero.

Three Thousand Years of Nostalgia (2022)

Evaluation:R

Release date: In theaters nationwide Friday, August 26, 2022.

Summary: In Three thousand years of nostalgia Alithea (Tilda Swinton) is a world-renowned scholar specializing in myths and legends. While in Istanbul, Alithea buys a small lidded jar from a local store. While cleaning, the lid comes off and a magical Djinn (Idris Elba) appears with an offer to grant him three wishes in exchange for his freedom.

To monitor: The film is from Oscar-winning filmmaker George Miller, known for his films Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), baby (1995), and road warr (1981).

word on the street: Award-winning cinematographer John Seale was convinced by George Miller to come out of retirement to work on the film.

my catch: Any film directed by George Miller and starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba is a film that I will be sure to see in theaters.

Alienoid

Alienoid (2022)

Evaluation: N / A

Release date: In select theaters Friday, August 26, 2022.

Summary: Alienoid is about two swordsmen who are in search of a legendary blade that is said to be able to bend time. They are about to meet people from the future who are chasing an escaped alien prisoner who could change the fate of the world.

To monitor: The film is part of a two-part film franchise. The two films were shot simultaneously for over a year of filming.

word on the street: The film recently premiered at the New York Asian Film Festival.

my catch: I love this combination of martial arts and science fiction.

run with the devil

Run with the Devil: The Savage World of John McAfee (2022)

Evaluation: N / A

Release date: Premiering on Netflix Wednesday, August 24, 2022

Summary: run with the devil is a documentary about John McAfee, best known for developing the first commercial anti-virus software. He later ran for president and was wanted for murder and tax evasion at the time of his death by suicide. Or was he murdered?

To monitor: The film is from Charlie Russell, an award-winning documentary filmmaker whose work includes Terry Pratchett: Choosing to Die (2011) and Chris Packham: Asperger and Me (2017).

word on the street: When McAfee was wanted for the murder of a neighbor, he fled and invited a film crew to join him.

My take: It should be a fascinating look at a man who had everything but walked a path that seemed doomed.

Time for Me (2022)

Evaluation:R

Release date: Premiering on Netflix Friday, August 26, 2022.

Summary: me time talks about Sonny (Kevin Hart). a husband and father to a loving family. When his wife takes the kids on a trip, Sonny finds he’s alone for the first time in a long time. He decides for a while and reconnects with a longtime friend (Mark Wahlberg). It’s been a crazy week that Sonny will never forget.

To monitor: The film is written and directed by John Hamburg, known for his films little fockers (2010), I love you man (2009), and Why him? (2016).

word on the street: The cast includes Regina Hall, John Amos, Jimmy O. Yang and Luis Gerardo Mendez.

my catch: It should be fun to see what kind of trouble Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg can get into.

The good boss

The Good Boss (2021)

Release date: In select theaters Friday, August 26, 2022.

Summary: The good boss is about Blanco (Javier Bardem), a man whose company is in the running for an award that could save it. Blanco is a man ready to do anything to make this happen.

To monitor: The film is currently at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, with over 45 reviews from film critics.

word on the street: The film won 13 prizes at the 2022 Goya Awards, the Spanish version of the Oscars.

my catch: You had me at ‘with Javier Bardem.

The invite

Summary: In The invite Evie (Nathalie Emmanuel) discovered through a DNA test that she has a long-lost cousin, who, after meeting her, invites her to a lavish wedding in England. Evie is about to discover that her new family has dark secrets.

To monitor: Nathalie Emmanuel is best known for her role as Missandel in the HBO series Game of thrones.

word on the street: Co-Writer/Director Jessica M. Thompson’s last feature was moon lightwhich won the 2017 People’s Choice Award at the SXSW Film Festival.

My take: All you need to know is that the original title of the film was “The Bride”.

Funny Pages (2022)

Evaluation: R

Release date: In select theaters Friday, August 26, 2022.

Summary: funny pages is about Robert (Daniel Zolghadri), a seventeen-year-old who decides to drop out of high school and step out into the real world to become a comic book artist. Robert is about to meet a group of people who could either change his world or return him to his parents.

To monitor: The film is written and directed by Owen Joseph Kline, one of the stars of the cult classic The Squid and the Whale (2005).

Word on the treet: The son of actors Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates, Owen Joseph Kline, based part of the film on his own experiences of wanting to be a cartoonist when he was younger.

my catch: Daniel Zolghadri was Riley in one of my favorite films of the past five years, Eighth Grade (2018).
