Malayalam lyricist Bichu Thirumala dies at 80 in Thiruvananthapuram

Malayalam lyricist and poet Bichu Thirumala died early Friday November 26 in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He was 80 years old.

Malayalam poet and lyricist Bichu Thirumala has died at the age of 80.

Famous Malayalam lyricist and poet B Sivasankaran Nair, affectionately known as Bichu Thirumala, died Friday, November 26 at 3:15 a.m. in a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He was 80 years old. Bichu Thirumala was admitted to the private hospital with respiratory problems and then suffered a heart attack. His condition worsened and he was placed on life support.


Bichu Thirumala breathed his last around 3:15 a.m. on Friday, November 26. He is survived by his wife, Prasanna, and his son, Suman Bichu, musical director of films. Details of his last rites are still awaited.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed his condolences on the death of Bichu Thirumala. He said, “He was close to the heart of the listener because he stood out in his lyrics and music. Many notable songs in Malayalam were written by him.”


B Sivasankaran Nair AKA Bichu Thirumala started his career as a lyricist with Bhaja Govindam in 1972. He was born in 1942 and became one of the most successful lyricists in Mollywood. He has twice won the Kerala State Film Awards for his work in Thrishna, Thenum Vayabum and Kadinjool Kalyanam.

Bichu Thirumala has worked with pillars like Ilaiyaraaja, AR Rahman, V Dakshinamurthy, MS Baburaj, G Devarajan, K Raghavan, Ouseppachan and many others.
