If you love classic villains, this weekend is full of new movies, from the return of an iconic horror villain to the Mad King Denzel Washington.
Ghostface returns to scare off a new cast of teenagers – plus Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette – in the highly anticipated fifth “Scream” movie. Old-school creatures are taken into account and are quite funny in the fourth and final animated film “Hotel Transylvania” slice, featuring the voices of Selena Gomez and Andy Samberg. The effort is packed with nasty kills, clever referential commentary and, like Wes Craven’s 1996 original, a new generation of Hollywood talent, though it lacks some of the winning awkwardness of past episodes.

If your child loves Drac and Co.: ‘Hotel Transylvania: Transformania’
Adam Sandler has left the animated franchise, but Samberg takes over in the decently fun fourth and final movie. Drac (now voiced by Brian Hull) wants to step down from running his monster hotel and hand over the keys to his daughter Mavis (Gomez), though the involvement of his clumsy normal son-in-law Johnny (Samberg) gives him pause. This leads to shenanigans involving a ray gun that turns Drac human and Johnny into a winged dragon creature as a tale of understanding unfolds on their way to resolving the situation.

If your heart digs the most Shakespeare: ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’
Washington is superb as the infamous main character in Joel Coen’s sleek black-and-white adaptation of the Bard classic. The Oscar-winning actor deftly navigates a descent into madness involving his equally ambitious wife (Francoise McDormand) and a plot to kill the popular Scottish King Duncan (Brendan Gleeson). The real draw here, however, is British stage actress Kathryn Hunter, who plays the three witches setting forth Macbeth’s momentous prophecy with eerie brilliance.

If You Think Alyssa Milano Is Still The Boss: “Brazen”
Murder is on in this campy, lifelong thriller starring Milano as Grace, a best-selling mystery writer who returns to her hometown of Washington, D.C., to visit her sister, a schoolteacher and interpreter. secret of the webcam (Emilie Ullerup). When her brother is found dead and Grace discovers his double life, she teams up with the hunky but caring police detective (Sam Page) next door and even poses as a leather-clad dominatrix to find clues, flush out suspects. and catch a streak. killer.

If you still feel a little boxed in: ‘The Pink Cloud’
Believe it or not, this prescient Brazilian sci-fi drama about a toxic pink cloud trapping everyone inside indefinitely was filmed before the pandemic. The tale is all too familiar, but also singularly insightful as it follows a woman (Renata de Lélis) stuck in her apartment with a man (Eduardo Mendonça) whom she met the day before. The two face a deadly phenomenon that forces them to be a couple, with video chats with loved ones and differing opinions on how best to live their lives.

- If you haven’t seen it in theaters (and need a superhero fix), the Marvel star “The Eternals” is finally on Disney + so you can watch Angelina Jolie to embrace his action movie side again. (Stick around for some very intriguing end credits scenes.)
- Ben Affleck just scored a Screen Actors Guild nomination, so catch him playing a bartender dad in director George Clooney’s “The Tender Bar,” which is now streaming on Amazon prime.
- Do you feel the need for a tearjerker? Directed by Denzel Washington and based on a true story, the romantic drama “A Diary for Jordan” (to AppleTV and other VOD platforms) stars Michael B. Jordan as a soldier in Iraq who keeps a diary full of life and love advice for his infant son at home.
