Sanjay Dutt to Fardeen Khan, the story of Bollywood with drugs

Bollywood and its history with drugs are long and winding. Time and time again, many Bollywood insiders have admitted that not only is drug culture prevalent in the industry, but several celebrities also use different types of addictive and non-addictive drugs. More importantly, in an exclusive interview with India Today Television following the Sushant Singh Rajput death case, Rhea Chakraborty admitted that the late actor was addicted to marijuana. And then there was the arrest of Armaan Kohli after the Narcotics Control Bureau (BNC) raided his home in Mumbai in August. As the NCB detains Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan following a drug seizure on Cordelia Cruises’ ship Empress off the coast of Mumbai, we take a look at some Bollywood celebrities who have had contact with drugs in the past.

While most celebrities never admit it, Sanjay Dutt has spoken a lot about his drug addiction. On Simi Garewal’s chat show a few years ago, Sanjay said he can’t remember a phase where he was truly at peace. He started using drugs in college. “It was just the trendy thing back then. Someone just said give it a try and that was it. For nine years of my life,” he said.

Sanjay also admitted to trying all of the drugs in the book. At the India Today Conclave 2016, the actor revealed an incident that occurred while under the influence of LSD, a psychedelic drug. Sanjay was called to his father Sunil Dutt’s office. “I went there and by the time I got there he’s sitting in front of me and it kind of hit me. I don’t even know what he was saying he was talking in slow motion and I’m trying to say, ‘ji, ji’. I saw a wick come out of his head and it lit up, like a candle. I saw it melt like a candle. And I jumped on him, trying to bring her face and that wick together, “he said.

He added: “Today, when I think about it, I imagine how he must have felt. And he said to his men: ‘Isko leke jao, yeh pagal ho gaya hai’. (Laughs)”

“Nine Years of Hell,” is how Sanjay described his drug phase. Sanjay Dutt then decided to get rid of the habit and has been clean for over four decades now.

Fardeen Khan, who is the son of veteran actor Feroz Khan, has worked in films like Fida, No Entry, Heyy Babyy and several others. He had a short career in Bollywood, followed by his complete disappearance from the limelight. Fardeen was a drug addict, for which he was arrested by Mumbai police on May 5, 2001. The actor was arrested with 9 g of cocaine. Fardeen had to take a drug treatment course to get rid of the habit that same year. Now Fardeen Khan is set to make his comeback after an 11-year gap with Sanjay Gupta’s Visfot, also starring Riteish Deshmukh. It is the remake of the Venezuelan film Rock, Paper, Scissors.

In the 90s, Mamta Kulkarni was one of the most popular stars in Bollywood. However, in June 2018, Thane police named the actress accused of the biggest drug racket ever recorded in India. Police in Thane seized 20 tons of ephedrine in a record breaking record in April. Drugs worth 2,000 crore rupees were confiscated during the police raid.

Last year, Bharti Singh and her husband Haarsh Limbachiyaa were arrested after a series of interrogations by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and drug recovery from his home during a raid. Both confessed to having consumed cannabis (ganja).

The NCB said in a statement: “In follow-up and corroboration with previous contributions, the NCB raided two locations on 11/21/2020, including the production office and the home of actress-comedy Ms. Bharti Singh and two locations, 86.5g of ganja were restored. Ms. Bharti Singh and her husband Harsh Limbachiya both agreed to consume ganja. Ms. Bharti Singh was placed under arrest in accordance with the provisions of the NDPS Act of 1986 and the examination of Shri Harsh Limbachiya is in progress (sic).

This year, in August, Armaan Kohli was arrested by the BCN after raiding his home in Juhu, Mumbai. In the drug-related case, the BCN questioned Armaan Kohli at length and then arrested him. A small amount of the drug was also found at his home. Armaan Kohli is a former Bigg Boss competitor who has appeared in films such as Jaani Dushman and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, among others.

Over the past year, the investigation into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput has given rise to several shocking revelations, some of which relate to drug trafficking in Bollywood. The late actor’s girlfriend, actress Rhea Chakraborty, revealed the names of around 25 Bollywood celebrities during her questioning by BCN, whom she saw using drugs. Big names like Deepika Padukone, Sara Ali Khan, Rahul Preet Singh, Shraddha Kapoor, among others have been revealed. Rhea Chakraborty also confessed that she was coordinating with her brother Showik to organize medication for Sushant Singh Rajput.

Apart from all this, a party hosted by Karan Johar in 2019 was also examined when it was alleged that drugs were being consumed at the do. It all started when Karan Johar shared a video of the party on social media, and internet users immediately spotted what they thought were “lines of cocaine” on the couch. The game was attended by Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, among others.
