A Northampton University film lecturer has received ‘preview’ news that his latest film is in the running for three regional awards.
Jez Alsop is a lecturer in film, television and digital production at the university. But when he’s not in class, he’s on a movie set wielding a clapperboard as a director/producer.
His latest directorial effort – Fixed – is a gritty urban thriller set in and around the murky world of bare-knuckle boxing, filmed entirely in Jez’s hometown of Birmingham.
In the film, player Daz (played by Nicholas Clarke) wants to give up his life as a criminal and start a new life in Spain. But to catch him, a vicious mobster thinks Daz cheated him out of money following a “rigged” fight.
Jez’s hard work in the director’s chair has paid off, as Fixed is up for three Midlands Movies Awards; Best Feature, Best Performance in a Leading Role for Clarke and Best Cinematography (Gary Rogers). The winning films will be announced during the official ceremony on Saturday June 11.
Jez is also executive producer of Fixed, and he cites British directors like Alan Clarke, Mike Leigh and Lynne Ramsay as some of his main influences.
Other influences include world cinema, American independent cinema and films of the 1970s
He said: “A famous director once said that it was hard enough to know what he liked about his movies, let alone what millions of other people would think. It’s wonderful to know that some people liked Fixed enough to put it forward for these awards.
“The team and I are really happy with the nominations, so we have our fingers crossed for the big night.”
The trailer for Fixed is here, and the full movie is available on most digital platforms (Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, etc.).
