An Oscar winner is back on the big screen this weekend in a movie that’s currently rated nearly 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Film critic Greg Russell joined co-host Jason Carr for Reel Talk to discuss this and two other new movies.
The film “The Woman King”, starring Viola Davis, is attracting a lot of attention and could even be nominated for an Oscar. The film is based on a true story about female warriors who banded together on the West Coast of Africa in the 1700s and 1800s to protect their land because there weren’t many men around. Russell gives this movie four and a half out of five reels and says it’s a movie everyone should see, especially women, because it’s empowering.
Next, Russell discussed the new Detroit-based documentary “Boblo Boats: A Detroit Ferry Tale,” which is narrated by Motown legend Martha Reeves. Russell says if you grew up in Detroit and went to Boblo, you’ll love this because it tells the story of the boats and is full of memorabilia for the Detroiters. Russell gives this film four reels and says there’s a snippet of “Live in the D” in the documentary.
Finally, the cast of the upcoming film “See How They Run” includes two Oscar winners and a four-time nominee. According to Russell, he hears it being a cinematic interpretation of the game Clue.
