World premiere of ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ at Berlinale 2022 | Movies News

New Delhi: “Gangubai Kathiawadi”, the magnum opus by filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, starring Alia Bhatt, is set to premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival next year. Considered one of the largest public film festivals in the world and an indispensable forum for the global film community, the film gala will be held from February 10 to 20, 2022.

Festival organizers announced on Wednesday that ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ was the only Indian selection and one of four films confirmed for the Berlinale’s special gala segment.

“The films selected in the Berlinale Special pay homage to exceptional human beings and the harsh but always surprising world we live in,” they said in a statement published on the official Berlinale website.

“Gangubai Kathiawadi” is a crime drama, adapted from one of the chapters of the famous author Hussain Zaidi’s book, “Mafia Queens of Mumbai”. Following the 2019 musical drama “Gully Boy,” the next film marks Bhatt’s second Berlinale outing.

The period film features Bhatt as the title role of Gangubai, one of the most powerful, loved and respected ladies in the Mumbai Kamathipura red light district in the 1960s.

Backed by Bhansali Productions and co-produced by Jayantilal Gada’s Pen India Limited, “Gangubai Kathiawadi” is set to hit theaters on February 18, 2022.

Carlo Chatrian, artistic director of the Berlinale, said cinema continues to be a “tool that connects people”.

“The pandemic has created distances – not only between people but also the way we see the world. Among the 2022 selection are films shot during the pandemic, reflecting on what it feels like to be disconnected from others. It is with this first batch of films that we want to highlight the power of cinema as a tool that connects people, places and times to come, ”Chatrian said in a statement.
